Rusty Nails Immersion

Rusty Nails Immersion

On July the 3rd, we were doing Immersion in the boardroom. Nicole told us that we were going to see what liquid would make nails rust faster. She put apple juice in one cup, tap water in the second one and salt water in another. She told us to write a hypothesis about what liquid will rust a nail faster. I wrote: I think that the nail in the salt water will rust the fastest.

The next day, on July the 4th, we checked on the nails. The one in apple juice had a diagonal 15 millimetre smudge of rust on it. The nail in salt water had a bunch of pale, rust - red flecks along where it was in the salt water. Finally, the nail in tap water looked like it had a carpet of rust on where it had been in the tap water. I volunteered to try and snap the salty nail. I tried to snap it, but it was as hard as a normal nail would be. I quickly washed my hands.

My hypothesis was uncorrect. The tap water had the most effect.

  1. Thisis a cool experiment - I wonder why the tap water one rusted the most? Why did you think the salt water one would be the rustiest?
